Contacting HMRC: The Main Routes And When To Use Them

There are times when you may need to contact HMRC about a tax query, a payment, a Self Assessment issue or a PAYE matter. The right route depends on what you need and whether your query is general or specific.
Start with HMRC’s digital assistant
HMRC’s digital assistant can answer many general questions online. If it cannot resolve the query, you may be offered a webchat with an HMRC adviser where one is available.
Using X for general queries
HMRC can answer general questions through X using @HMRCcustomers. This route should not be used for personal or case-specific queries, and you should never include personal details in a public post.
Calling HMRC
For Self Assessment queries, the source material gives 0300 200 3310. For income tax queries, it gives 0300 200 3300. Phone lines are shown as being open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Other helpline details are available through GOV.UK.
Writing to HMRC
HMRC can also be contacted by post. For Self Assessment queries, the address given is: Self Assessment, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS. For PAYE and income tax queries, the address given is: Pay As You Earn and Self Assessment, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS.
Avoid unnecessary repeat contact
If you have already contacted HMRC, use the online service to check when you can expect a reply. HMRC advises taxpayers not to chase again until that date has passed.
